Missionary Letters of Saint Nikolai Velimirovich Part 2

A Treasury of Serbian Orthodox Spirituality Volume 7.

Cassiana & Missionary Letters of Saint Nikolai Velimirovich Letter 101-200.

Instead of a foreward, the editor decided to print Cassiana, an exceptional spiritual writing of the Holy Bishop. Is the monk Kalistrat a historical person or someone created to tell the story? In any case, such knowledge is not necessary for us to appreciate the text.

The text itself moves as a narrative containing other narratives within. It begins and ends as a story of a pilgrimage and conversion to and from Milesevo monastery. It is a narrative of conversion as well as sanctity of the nun Cassiana. (pp.13-15)

Bishop Nikolai's Missionary Letters were written over a period of many years, and to a people of a wide variety of backgrounds. He responded to the questions and concerns of both Orthodox and non-Orthodox, to the learned and to people of little or no formal education.

A central theme, if not the central theme of the Bishop's highly practical theology is that of gratefulness, of finding God's presence in the middle of the difficulties and sorrows of life, as much as in times of joy and fulfilment.
