Additional information

Description

This icon symbolises the power of the Byzantine Empire. St Justinian, the emperor who commissioned Agia Sophia, and St Constantine, from which Constantinople received its name, are depicted holding models of the city of Constantinople. This represents the empire’s expansion and influence. The icons are part of a mosaic panel located at the southwestern entrance.
