We have before us the letters of a great Russian saint, the renowned theologian St Theophan the Recluse. These are the collected responses to letters from his spiritual children, who plied him with all manner of questions, The saint gave simple and lucid answers, drawing on his own personal experience, as well as that of the Church of the holy fathers.

This volume explores the Christian relationship to sickness and death, since we are confronted by them so often in life, and always these encounters are associated with grief, despair and sadness.
