This Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos, Virgin Mary, is chanted on the first five successive Fridays of the Lent period. Since the word Χαίρε (Ηaire) Hail, is continually chanted throughout the service, the Hymn came to be called the Χαιρετισμοί (Hairetismi), Salutations or Greetings.
