The Monasteries of Kalymnos have a wealthy history of mercy, grace and the beholding of Jesus. Aside from the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, all the other monasteries were born in the duration of slavery and later, of Italian occupation which was the harshest, in matters of religion. The first workers of this spiritual birth were a few distinct spiritual personalities such as the newly-appeared miracle worker, Saint Savva of Kalymnos; the ascetic from Patmos, the Venerable Amphilochios Makris; Hieromonk Heirotheos Kourounis and others. But also, women stood up and took an active part in monastic activities in Kalymnos…
The monasteries of Kalymnos cultivated ecclesiastical arts…In general, their unparalleled diligence aided not only in the spiritual, but also in the general development of all Kalymnos. Our monasteries today are sacred refuges of every petitioning soul who thirsts for Christ and Greece. They are centres of spiritual retreat, comfort, consolation, hospitality and support in every good work pleasing to the Lord and philanthropy….
Metropolitan of Leros, Kalymnos and Astypalaia Nectarios.
